MoMA Modern Play House

June 10th, 2010

Last week we talked about Mid-Century Modern home tours and highlighted one particular tour that was taking place in Sacramento, CA. Continuing with that theme, today we stumbled upon a unique children’s toy – a Modern Play House that is made by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

This play house lets future modern architects and designers develop a sense of style at an early age as they experiment with this set of six different modular nesting boxes. The kit includes walls, flooring, furniture, lighting and other home accessories. There’s over 50 decorating options to allow that young Joseph Eichler of yours to create their own vision of a modern space.

Parents out there might want to consider passing on the Barbie Dream House and opt for this play house with some real modern flair.

Designer Profile – Jasper Conran

November 18th, 2009

Jasper Conran is the son of the famous designer Sir Terence Conran, and has made his own name for himself as one of the most successful present day designers in England. Jasper went to the Parsons School of Art & Design in New York, has designed everything from costumes to interiors and presently he creates thousands of products a year ranging from  housewares and tableware to clothing, luggage and fabrics. Jasper has products and designs in a variety of stores and residences that are designed in numerous styles.

Initially it was hard for Jasper to branch out on his own because people would assume that his father was bankrolling his business. Jasper has now had his own fashion business for 30 years and unlike some designers he becomes very attached to the entire process of how his clothes and products are made. He will often visit the factories where his clothing and products are being produced, to see and learn how the manufacturing process takes place.

Jasper’s father was a lover of modernism, but the homes that Jasper has owned have been primarily traditional 11th-century manors and Georgian homes. He has always been obsessed with grand country homes and doesn’t relate his own tastes with his fathers’ (who now also lives in a Georgian house).

Hasper’s elegant tableware can be found in Wedgwood stores and his housewares, fabrics, luggage, eye wear and clothing can be found in the department store Debenhams. Jasper’s own flagship store, 36 Sackville Street in London is a magnificient 8,000 sq ft store in one of London’s finest postcodes in the heart of Mayfair. Here you will find his bridal collections, made-to-measure men’s & womenswear and living and dining room collections (such as tableware, furniture etc.).

Crossover Between Fashion & Interior Design

November 6th, 2009

We know that sometimes this crossover is not always a good fit, but when they come together just right, it can be beautiful. Decor and couture have often had ties to each other historically, and the styles and trends sometimes even follow each and become intermingled. Recently it has become more and more common that a fashion designer will design a room, building or product. Similarly an interior designer might also put out a fashion line.

“I’ve long believed that the eye runs naturally from the catwalk to the kitchen.”

Anna Wintour, Editor of US Vogue

Here are a few of our favorite crossover designs that we’ve seen recently. Click any image for a larger version.

This  THG line entitled “POEMES by Chantal Thomass” was designed by the French Lingerie Designer Chantal Thomass. To decorate the bathroom, THG and Thomass revisit the tradition of the boudoir with ultra-refined and super-chic fixtures crafted from white porcelain and decorated with delicate silver borders. The collection hints covertly at sexuality with plenty of frills, ribbons and flounce. “Where at home can you hear the gentle murmur of flowing water?” said Thomass. “Where can you make yourself as beautiful as you can be? Because it is more than a simple room, because it is a prelude to the game of seduction, I choose to transform the bathroom over in our own brand image. It is now a space for lovers alone; a place of total seduction.”
