5 Reasons to Have a Home Book Library

September 2nd, 2010

After reading the title of this post you might be asking yourself, “Get with the times, buddy – I just bought an iPad. Why on earth would I need something as antiquated as a book library in my home?” Well this post will attempt to answer that question for you and give you some reasons why a home book library can be a rewarding design choice.

Leather book library

Home library

1. An expression of one’s personality: This aspect is completely lost with the digitalization of books and music. With the advancements in technology most evident in such devices as the iPod, Kindle and now the iPad, we are losing the ability to learn about a person just by observing a record on their shelf or a novel in a bookcase. It used to be that you could learn an awful lot about a person’s interests just by taking a brief glance at what was sitting on their shelf; this is not the case anymore with e-readers that have reduced books to a collection of 1’s and 0’s.

2. A great way to impress guests: What better to show guests that you’re cultured and intellectual than some strategically placed Marcel Proust or 19th century Russian literature on your shelves? The best part is you don’t actually have to read them. They serve their purpose just sitting their collecting dust while you watch your favorite MTV reality shows.

3. Makes for a good conversation starter: In this case you probably need to have read the books on your shelf or at the very least read the blurb on the back of the dust jacket. A guest might see a book in your library and realize that you both share an intense interest in rare miniature frogs; a new friendship is then instantly formed.

4. When done right, it just looks cool: A shelf full of iPads is totally unnecessary – not to mention an odd design choice. Books, on the other hand, make for endless amount of decorative possibilities. You can outfit your home library in antique or modern leather, color sorted covers, vintage cloth, custom wrapped solids and whatever else looks good covering a book.

Yes, designing a home library can be a daunting task. How do I organize the books – alphabetically, by genre, chronologically, by size or color of book? What type of covers do I use for the books? Do I go with a contemporary or classic look? I suppose the answers to these questions depend much on personal preference, but there are companies whose sole job is helping you answer these types of questions. One such company is Juniper Books and founder Thatcher Wine. Juniper Books helps owners and designers build custom book collections for home libraries – fully customized based upon interests, design preference and budget. Afraid you don’t quite have the knowledge of a Harvard literature professor? No problem. Thatcher Wine’s knowledge of literature, history and art is broad, and his source for new and antique books is diverse. Not simply just a book worm, he also fully understands the creative and aesthetic possibilities of books. Wine is able to cater the bindings, color and size of the books to your particular design needs. To find out more about Juniper Books’ services visit www.juniperbooks.com.

Ok. So maybe that’s only four reasons, but “five reasons” makes for a better title. Still, these four reasons should be more than enough to justify the continued existence of home book libraries into the 21st century. Feel free to share your reasons for a home book library in the comments section.

THG’s Bagatelle: A Pinball Wizard

August 30th, 2010

THG’s newest bathroom collection, the Bagatelle, is a playful take on luxury bathroom fixtures and accessories designed by highly respected French designer Olivier Gagnère, whose eclectic Parisian apartment was recently featured on the cover of Elle Décor’s April 2010 issue. In designing the Bagatelle Collection, Gagnère was inspired by a table game that originated from a royal party thrown in 1777; this royal game has since evolved into what is now the pinball machine.

The Bagatelle Collection’s humorous, imaginative design invites users to touch and play with the faucet handles, knobs, buttons and shapes that have been cleverly fashioned from signature elements of a pinball machine. Slender lever handles are reminiscent of a pinball machine’s flippers and the round shapes found throughout the Bagatelle Collection echo the round bumpers and ivory balls of the table game.

Choosing beauty in the bathroom

July 30th, 2010

Remodeling a bathroom is still considered a smart and economical choice for homeowners – they can enjoy the fruits of their labor now and recoup much of the costs later. The building blocks of any bathroom seem relatively elementary: sink, toilet, shower, vanity, mirror, lighting. However, choosing products for this room still intimidates many homeowners. Here are a few choices for the bathroom that we consider to be liberating, not limiting.

Ameli from Hastings Tile & Bath

Choosing pure white for your vanity should not feel as though you are settling. With the Ameli from Tulli Zuccari, you need never apologize. Graceful and elegant, the vanity sits atop two tapered legs that can be adorned with either gold or chrome accents. The Ameli is perfect for minimalists who appreciate its modern appeal.

Contemporary Cottage on Bainbridge Island

July 20th, 2010

Bainbridge Island is an island city located in Puget Sound, Washington, off the coast of Seattle.  It was named by Money magazine as the second-best place to live in the United States. Occasionally we will get sent information on homes for sale on this lovely island. We wanted to pass along one particular contemporary cottage redesign that caught our eye.

This garden cottage is owned by artists who took a simple 1970’s ranch house and with a few subtle changes were able to create a free-flowing, bright, open floor plan with the kitchen as the hub of the living space. The redesign was then extended to the two outbuildings in the backyard that were transformed into two separate functional work spaces: one an artist studio and the other a hobby workshop.

This home demonstrates the appeal of maintaining separate work/play spaces in a small efficient package without needing one giant house to contain everything. The idyllic scene created by the lush gardens and trees also gives you an idea of how this Pacific Northwest island city has obtained such a high rating of livability.

Property Profile:

- 3 bedrooms / 2 baths
– 2 Workshop/Art Studio Outbuildings
– Approximately 1,592 square feet on .35 acres
– Expansive Deck w/ Hot Tub and Seating
– 2 Energy Efficient Propane Fireplaces
– Wood exterior, composition roof

View photos of the cottage below. For more information about this property visit http://gardencottage.bainbridgehouses.com

Achieving a calm, Zen-like state in one’s day-to-day life is a constant struggle. The bath is a place where one often attempts to achieve this state of meditation. The success of meditation in the bath is dictated in large part by the environment and the bathroom products that you surround yourself with. Here are some products that can help you obtain that transcendent bath.
