Art Deco Revival – Product Highlights

March 8th, 2010

Did you know that Art Deco was originally called Style Moderne? The Art Deco movement began in Paris in 1925, during the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs. Characterized by creative uses of materials such as steel, bronze, and glass, the highly stylized details are what help us identify Art Deco. Art Deco’s design structure is based on geometric shapes; circles, semi-circles, and geometric designs converged with glass and metal to form this singular design movement.

The Chrysler building in NYC tells you exactly what you need to know about the heights Art Deco reached. Glamorous and ‘moderne’ now, designers today pay tribute to this important era with products that themselves are destined to become classics – no matter the scale of the object, the Art Deco spirit lives within these exquisite products.

The Maya wall sconce from Studio Italia Design looks as though it might have come right off a grand Art Deco building from the 1920’s. Narrow rectangular strips of metal are stepped in precise formation. Conforming to Art Deco’s stylized use of metal, this sconce adds a more contemporary touch with the use of white lacquered metal. The sumptuous pairing of Lalique crystal with enamel delivers a classic Art Deco product. Given that Rene Lalique himself was at the forefront of the Deco trend, this faucet honors Rene’s vision brilliantly. An intricate bas-relief pattern is delicately cut in the crystal which adorns the handles. To balance the design, the handles themselves are hand-painted enamel palm-frond motifs. Glamorous and distinctive, this faucet is transcendent.
Studio Italia Design – Clessidra The Clessidra glass wall sconce with a satin nickel frame can sit proudly alongside other Deco-inspired elements in any home. Cool and elegant, the hand-blown, scored glass, shown here in amber, brings a European edge to the design party. Also available in satin-white, orange, or for an even more glamorous look – amethyst or polished red. For more decorative faucets visit www.thgstyle.com & www.thgusa.com

Amazing 500-Horsepower Plug-In Porsche

March 3rd, 2010

Porsche has just unveiled their newest concept car, and this one is electric! This is the first plug-in hybrid car ever, and was released at the Geneva Auto Show. It is being called the 918 Spyder, and this amazing Porsche is not just green, but also has a sleek and stylish design worth of this blog!

The 918 Spyder gets 78 miles per gallon, has low emissions of 70g CO2/km, can go 16 miles on electric charge alone, and hits 0-60 in 3.2 seconds giving the Tesla Roadster a run for its money (the Tesla Roadster goes 0-60 in 3.7 seconds). The car gets its power from both a 500-horsepower V8 motor, in addition to two electric motors that give the sportscar an additional 218-horsepower.

We know this is just a concept car as of now, but we really hope to see these on the streets in Hollywood in the near future!

Sneak Peak of the Design for the Oscar’s Green Room

March 1st, 2010
Roger Thomas

Roger Thomas

Since the public generally does not get to see where Oscar hosts and honorees rehearse and celebrate backstage on Awards night, we’ve got a preview for you!  For the eighth year in a row, Architectural Digest assigns an interior designer to build a dazzling, comfortable Greenroom at the Kodak Theater.

Architectural Digest has awarded the honor of designing this room to designer Roger Thomas who will be in charge of creating the design of the Architectural Digest Greenroom.

This is the eighth consecutive year that Architectural Digest will produce the exclusive backstage lounge for the Oscar® presenters and honorees, and this year the design will will come alive backstage with the sparkle and romance of legendary Hollywood. The guests will be able to relax, rehearse and revel, Golden Era-style.

Thomas celebrates a time when developments in sound, color, genre and dialogue heightened the cinema experience. He amplifies a black and white room with varying shades in between—platinum, blonde and silver—and creates light and movement with reflective materials such as glass objects, metal occasional tables and mirrored walls that were popular interior design elements of the period.

“My fondest memories are cinematic moments,” said Thomas.  “The films have as much to do with set design as they do the action.”    The focal point of this year’s Architectural Digest Greenroom will be a paint-splattered floor, inspired by the scenic departments of Hollywood studio lots.  Christopher Peacock’s exquisite paint collection is used “to keep the room active and interesting,” said Thomas.

The color swatches include Camouflage, Stick, Darby, Bricks, Medium Brown and Drab.   “The floor will have a polished black base,” said Thomas.  “It is a contemporary version of those that Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers would glide across in the 1930s.”  The 1,029 square foot Greenroom will feature French furnishings and decorative accessories by Roche Bobois, adding 1930s hues and flair; decorative Afghan rugs by Amadi Carpets to soften the acoustics; durable yet sophisticated fabrics from Sunbrella’s “Luminous” satin weave collection in the main room and linen textures in the new garden area where Restoration Hardware debuts pieces from its outdoor Klismos Cast Aluminum furniture collection.  This “outdoor” space will feature a scrim ceiling with birds on sky blue flying overhead, hedges and antique planters.  Four chairs and one daybed receive special attention from Thomas in preparation for Oscar® night.  He will hand paint the natural muslin upholstery with freestyle whirls and curves for one-of-a-kind pieces.

Roger Thomas is Executive Vice President Design for Wynn Design and Development. He is famous for designing the interiors of the Wynn Las Vegas as well as the Encore at Wynn Las Vegas. It’s the most sought after prize by the best of the Olympians: Gold. Winning it shows strength, power, precision, finesse, and represents excellence in a class of its own. The attributes of gold transcend into the inspiring designs of the bathroom suite. Bold, durable, yet exquisitely elegant, gold finishes capture the authentic mystique reminiscent of the legendary Olympic games of Ancient Roman times and inspire the design of the elements that surround us today. Contemporary Designer Chairs For Kids! (These are super cute)

February 24th, 2010

Little Nest is an Australian owned furniture company that has recently launched in the United States. Already, some of their high quality children’s chairs are available at Barney’s flagship store in Madison Avenue, with many notable stores having stock in the coming weeks.

One reason the company decided to make these mini versions of these chairs was because they were tired of not being able to find children’s tables and chairs to match her own home’s contemporary furniture.  Little Nest owner Samantha Firestone decided to create child sized versions of iconic modern classic pieces from the 20th century. Little Nest’s debut range of children’s chairs respectfully pays tribute to such classics as the Barcelona Chair, Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, and LC2 by Le Corbusier.

Urban Bathroom Suite – Metropolis by THG

February 24th, 2010

What is black and white and sterling and transparent all over? This is not a joke. This is Metropolis, a stunning collection from THG featuring Cristal de Lalique.

Form, shape, and texture are Metropolis’ first notes of intrigue, starting with the ultimate in unique structure – the Urban Bathtub. The ultra-modern Urban Bathtub features a unique transparent curved glass opening intended to reveal the body in its true relaxed form. The beautiful lines of the Niagara waterfall tub filler create a gentle cascade of water from its spout into the bathtub. The Metropolis Collection of faucetry, bath fixtures and accessories combine pure geometric lines with the refinement of inset Lalique Crystal. The iconic raisin motif of the crystal sculpture, originally created by designer René Lalique in 1928, decorated the interiors of the Orient Express and evokes the texture and fluidity of water.

The square shaped handles reveal crystal encased in precious metal. The tops of the lever handles are adorned with the same raisin motif, creating a sophisticated contrast of crystal against shimmering metal surfaces. Sleek, modern, and fantastically urban, the city may never sleep, but here, it certainly is tranquil.

What do you Think of the New US Embassy Design for London?

February 23rd, 2010

The architectural firm Kieran Timberlake based in Philadelphia was just allowed to release their new design for the new $1 billion dollar US Embassy slated to be built in London to replace the existing embassy in the ritzy Mayfair area of London. The new embassy was designed to use the landscape as a very important security feature. The use of moats, hills and the fact that it will be set back from any roads will allow the new embassy to have an appealing exterior with gardens and fields, which is a departure from the bunker-esque look of the old embassy. Some are criticizing the design because it is far off the beaten path when compared with the location of the main part of London, while others are praising the designs use of low-key, yet highly effective security measures.  What do you think of the new design?

Here are some images of the new design taken from usembassy.org.uk. Click on any image for a larger version:
